I've been making colorful and elegant leather handbags and accessories for almost 30 years.  Now I'm also making something completely different--felted wool vessels, pillows, and scarves with a variety of decorative treatments.  I either use Japanese tie-dye methods (shibori) to create patterns or embed felted patterns into the surface.   And yes, I will probably make a few felted wool handbags at some point!
